Why Your Wedding Table Shapes Matter More Than You Think

Photographer: Ali Herlihey Photography

When couples start choosing wedding rentals, they often focus on how the tables will look once they’re decorated. What colour will the linens be? Will there be candles? Tall florals or low arrangements? Chargers or simple place settings?

But before you get to any of those details, there’s another decision to make.

What shape should your tables be?

Round, rectangular, and harvest tables can each create a completely different atmosphere. Your choice can also affect your floor plan, seating arrangements, centrepieces, and the way guests interact throughout dinner.

There isn’t one table style that’s right for every wedding. The best choice depends on your space and the kind of reception you’re creating.

Round Tables Create Natural Conversation

Round tables remain popular for weddings for a reason. Guests can easily see and speak with others seated around the table, which can make dinner feel social and comfortable.

They’re also incredibly versatile from a design perspective. A simple linen can create a classic look, while colourful napkins, chargers, candles, florals, and other details can completely change the finished table.

Round tables can work particularly well when you have groups of guests who already know one another. However, your seating plan still matters. Avoid trying to squeeze too many people around one table simply to reduce the number of tables in your floor plan. Guests need enough room for their place settings and enough space to comfortably sit throughout dinner.

Rectangular Tables Create a Different Atmosphere

Rectangular tables can give a wedding reception a completely different look. They create long lines throughout the room or tent and can work beautifully for weddings with a more relaxed, family-style feeling. You can also use them individually or arrange several together to create longer tables.

Rectangular tables also give you a different approach to decorating. Instead of designing one centrepiece in the middle of a round table, you can carry your décor along the length of the table. Bud vases, candles, greenery, floral arrangements, and runners can all work beautifully with this setup.

If you’re using linens, make sure you’re choosing the correct size for the table. The same rectangular table can look completely different depending on how far you want the linen to drop toward the floor.

Harvest Tables Don’t Always Need Linens

Sometimes the table itself is part of the décor. Our harvest tables bring natural wood into the reception and can work beautifully for farm weddings, tent weddings, backyard celebrations, and venues where you want a warmer, more organic look.

Because you’re intentionally showing the wood, you don’t necessarily need a full tablecloth. A runner, greenery, bud vases, candles, or florals can add detail while leaving plenty of the tabletop visible.

Harvest tables can also make a beautiful choice for the head table, even if you’re using round tables throughout the rest of the reception.

You don’t have to choose one table style and use it everywhere. Mixing table shapes can actually make a floor plan more interesting.

Your Head Table Can Be Different

Your guest tables aren’t the only ones to consider. Think about how you want the wedding party seated too. A long head table creates a strong focal point and gives you plenty of room for florals, candles, and other décor. Some couples prefer a smaller sweetheart table instead.

Neither option needs to match the guest tables exactly. In fact, choosing something different can help visually separate the head table from the rest of the reception. This is also where rental choices such as chairs, linens, silk florals, candles, and backdrops can help create a focal point without changing the entire room.

Table Shape Can Affect Your Entire Floor Plan

This is where table selection becomes about more than appearance. Different table shapes use space differently. The same tent or reception room can feel completely different depending on whether you fill it with round tables, long rectangular tables, or a combination of both.

You also need enough room between tables for guests and vendors to move comfortably. Your dance floor, bar, DJ, catering area, entrances, and head table all need to fit into the same overall layout.

That’s why we recommend thinking about your tables while you’re working on the floor plan rather than treating them as a separate décor decision. Sometimes changing the table arrangement can solve a layout problem without changing the entire wedding design.

Let the Table Shape Work With Your Wedding Style

Instead of choosing tables because they’re currently popular, think about the overall look you’re creating. A formal reception may look beautiful with linen-covered round tables. Long rectangular tables can create an intimate dinner-party feeling. Exposed wood harvest tables can add warmth to a sailcloth tent or outdoor wedding.

You can also combine them. Your guest tables could be round while your wedding party sits at a harvest head table. Or you could alternate table shapes throughout a larger tent to create a less uniform layout.

Once you’ve chosen the tables, you can start layering in everything else. Linens, napkins, chairs, glassware, chargers, candles, silk florals, and other décor can all build on that foundation.

If you’re planning a 2027 or 2028 wedding, reserving your favourite furniture early is always a good idea. Our wood furniture and other limited-inventory rentals can book quickly for popular wedding weekends. You can finalize quantities and smaller design details later as your plans come together.
